
How We Learn – The Psychology Behind Learning
Why do some children seem to learn effortlessly while others struggle, even when they sit in the same classroom?
Every year, many children are labelled careless, weak or poor learners. Parents worry, teachers get frustrated, and slowly, the child begins to lose confidence.
But perhaps we need to ask a different question:
Is the child really unable to learn… or have we misunderstood how learning works?
Let us begin with a familiar story.
A Parent–Teacher Meeting
Shalini had taken a day off from work. It was the fourth time her son’s class teacher had called her for a Parent–Teacher Meeting.
She walked into the classroom feeling anxious. She had a fair idea of what she was about to hear, though a small part of her hoped things might be different this time.
The teacher opened Shubham’s notebook and began turning the pages.
“Look, Ms. Shalini…”
“Shubham hardly pays attention in class.”
“See what he writes. Most of the time, he doesn’t understand what is being taught.”
“He seems lost in his own world.”
“The class is doing one thing… and he is doing something entirely different.”
With every sentence, Shalini grew more worried.
She looked at her son’s notebook and then at his teacher, but found herself speechless.
On her way home, one question kept troubling her:
“What is wrong with my child?”
But… Is Something Really Wrong?
Stories like Shubham’s are not uncommon.
Almost every classroom has children who struggle to concentrate, remember lessons or keep pace with others.
We often think learning simply means listening carefully, memorising information and reproducing it in an examination.
Psychology tells us it is much more than that.
Learning is the process through which our brain receives information, makes sense of it, stores it and uses it later. Understanding this process can help students, parents, teachers—and anyone trying to learn something new.
What Is Learning?
Learning is not a one-time event. It continues throughout life.
From the moment we are born, we learn to recognize faces, understand language, walk, communicate, solve problems, build relationships and adapt to new situations.
In psychology, learning generally refers to a lasting change in knowledge, skills or behavior that comes through experience, observation or practice.
It is not just about collecting information. Learning can change the way we think, respond and understand the world.
It may involve gaining new knowledge or modifying what we already know. It can happen through observation, experience and repeated practice—and it can happen anywhere, not just in a classroom.
In simple words, learning is the process through which experience changes us.
Learning Is Different for Everyone
One of the biggest misconceptions about learning is that everyone learns in the same way.
We don’t.
Some people understand quickly by reading. Others learn better by listening, discussing or actually doing something. Different tasks may also require different approaches.
Our previous knowledge, health, motivation, emotions, attention and environment can all affect how well we learn.
That is why comparing one learner with another can create unnecessary pressure.
Understanding these differences is the first step towards becoming a better learner—and a better teacher.
To understand why learning sometimes succeeds and sometimes struggles, we need to look at three important parts of every learning experience.

Every learning experience—whether at school, at home or in everyday life—involves three essential elements:

The Learning Process
The Learning Situation
All three influence the outcome.
1. The Learner
Who is a learner?
Every one of us.
A child learning to walk, a student preparing for an examination, a professional developing a new skill or an elderly person learning to use a smartphone—we continue to learn throughout life.
But no two learners are exactly alike.
Each person brings different strengths, experiences and challenges. Previous knowledge, physical and emotional well-being, motivation, attention and surroundings can all influence learning.
This is why two students sitting in the same classroom and listening to the same teacher may learn very differently.
2. The Learning Process
Teaching and learning are often treated as the same thing.
They are not.
A teacher can teach, but that does not automatically mean learning has taken place.
Consider three situations.
Situation A
The teacher explains a concept.
The learner understands it.
Learning has taken place.
Situation B
The teacher teaches one thing, but the learner takes away something quite different.
Imagine a teacher explaining mathematics to a child who feels anxious or frightened. The child may forget the formulas but remember the fear or embarrassment associated with the class.
The subject was Mathematics.
The learning became fear.
Situation C
Sometimes nobody formally teaches anything, yet learning still happens.
A child watches parents helping a neighbor. A student sees a senior treating others with respect. Someone learns honesty simply by observing another person’s actions.
No lesson was formally taught.
Yet something was learnt.
Did You Notice?
Learning is not limited to what someone intends to teach.
We also learn through observation, emotions, experiences and relationships. Sometimes the most powerful lessons are never spoken aloud.
This is why the learner, teacher and subject matter need to work together. When they do not, learning can become difficult even when teaching continues.
3. The Learning Situation
Learning does not happen in isolation.
The classroom atmosphere, the teacher’s behavior, the mood of the class, available learning materials and even the physical surroundings can affect how well a learner responds.
Together, these form the learning situation.
A positive environment can encourage curiosity and confidence. A stressful or intimidating one can make learning harder.
Five Important Parts of a Learning Situation
The Learner: The person gaining new knowledge or skills.
The Teacher or Instructor: The person who guides, explains and supports learning.
The Subject Matter: The topic, concept or skill being taught.
Teaching Materials: Books, charts, videos, models, digital resources and other learning aids.
Physical Facilities: A safe, comfortable and reasonably distraction-free place to learn.
Learning Is More Than Intelligence
We often assume that successful learning depends mainly on intelligence.
It doesn’t.
A highly capable student may struggle because of stress, poor motivation or an unsupportive environment. Another student may progress steadily through curiosity, discipline and regular practice.
Learning is shaped by many factors working together.
And to understand it better, we must look at something closely connected with it—memory.
Learning and Memory: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Why can you still remember how to ride a bicycle after years, but forget something you studied only a week ago?
Why can a few notes of an old song suddenly bring back a childhood memory?
The answer lies in memory.
Learning helps us acquire information and skills. Memory helps us keep and use them later.
Memory is often described through three basic processes:
Encoding. Storage. Retrieval.
1. Encoding – Receiving the Information
Imagine your memory as a library.
New experiences, words, images and skills first need to enter the system. This is encoding.
When you read, listen, observe or practise, your brain processes that experience so it can be remembered.
Attention matters. If we are distracted, information is less likely to be encoded well.
2. Storage – Keeping It
Once information has been received, it needs to be retained.
This is storage.
Meaningful information, repeated practice and revisiting what we have learnt can help memories last longer.
Think of it as placing a book on the right shelf instead of leaving it somewhere on a table.
3. Retrieval – Bringing It Back
Retrieval means accessing stored information when we need it.
Remembering an answer during an examination, recalling someone’s name or performing a familiar skill all involve retrieval.
Sometimes it happens instantly. At other times, we know we know something—but cannot quite bring it to mind.
A Simple Way to Remember
Think of the library again:
Encoding — bringing the book in.
Storage — keeping it on the shelf.
Retrieval — finding it when you need it.
All three matter for effective learning.
Not All Learning Is the Same
We do not learn every kind of information in the same way.
Learning Facts
Names, dates, definitions and other factual information rely heavily on understanding and memory.
For example, remembering that India’s Constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950 requires us to retain and later recall that information.
Learning Skills
Learning to swim, drive, ride a bicycle or play the guitar is different.
At first, every movement requires attention. With practice, the skill becomes smoother and increasingly automatic.
Repeated practice helps strengthen the brain pathways involved in performing the skill.
Eventually, you stop thinking about every individual movement.
You simply do it.
Learning Through Association
Our brains naturally connect experiences.
A child who repeatedly receives encouragement after completing homework may begin to associate studying with positive feelings. An old song may instantly remind us of a particular person, place or time.
Animals also learn through associations. Pets, for example, may learn to respond to certain sounds, gestures or commands because those signals become connected with particular outcomes.
Learning Through Rewards and Consequences
Behavior is also shaped by what follows it.
Praise, encouragement or success may strengthen a behavior, while appropriate consequences can discourage unwanted behavior.
For long-term learning, especially in children, encouragement and constructive feedback are often more helpful than creating fear.
Learning by Observation
Many important lessons are never formally taught.
We learn simply by watching others.
A child picks up language by listening to people around them. A student watches a dance teacher’s movements. A new employee observes experienced colleagues before trying a task independently.
This is observational learning.
Children, in particular, often learn as much from what adults do as from what adults tell them.
One Method Does Not Fit Everyone—or Everything
Different learners and different tasks may benefit from different approaches.
Reading may work well for one task, while diagrams, discussion, practice or hands-on experience may work better for another.
The aim is not to find one fixed “learning style”, but to discover which methods help us understand and remember a particular kind of information.
That leads to an obvious question:
If this is how learning works, why does it sometimes feel so difficult?
Why Does Learning Sometimes Feel Difficult?
Have you ever read the same paragraph again and again, only to realize that nothing seems to stay in your mind?
It happens to all of us.
Our brains are remarkable, but our capacity to handle new information at one time is limited. Too much information, distraction or stress can make learning harder.
Fortunately, a few simple approaches can help.
How Can We Learn Better?
Break Big Tasks into Smaller Chunks
Large tasks can feel overwhelming.
Breaking a lesson into smaller sections makes information easier to process and gives us clear, manageable goals.
Sometimes learning a little at a time works better than trying to finish everything in one sitting.
Give Your Brain Time
Learning is not only about how long we study.
Spacing study sessions over time and revisiting material after a gap can improve long-term retention.
The brain needs opportunities to return to information—not simply hours of continuous study.
Practice, Then Practice Again
Reading something once rarely makes it stick.
Each time we recall information or practice a skill, learning becomes stronger. With time, tasks that once demanded effort become easier and more natural.
Whether it is mathematics, a language, driving or music, regular practice matters.
Stay Curious
Curiosity makes us want to know more.
When a question genuinely interests us, we are more likely to pay attention, explore and connect new information with what we already know.
That is why asking “Why?” can often take learning deeper than simply memorising “What?”
Emotions Matter
Learning is not driven by intelligence alone.
Stress, anxiety, fear and boredom can interfere with attention and learning. A supportive environment can make it easier to concentrate, participate and keep trying.
Children—and adults—learn better when they feel safe enough to ask questions and make mistakes.
Common Myths About Learning
Some familiar beliefs about learning deserve a closer look.
Myth 1: Good marks always mean good learning.
Not necessarily.
A student may memorize enough to score well and forget much of it later.
Marks can tell us something about performance, but genuine learning also involves understanding and being able to use what we know.
Myth 2: Reading the same chapter repeatedly is the best way to learn.
Re-reading can make material feel familiar, but familiarity is not the same as understanding.
Trying to recall information without looking, explaining it in your own words and solving problems can often be more effective.
Myth 3: Some people are simply “bad learners.”
People learn at different speeds and may struggle with different things.
Difficulty in one area does not mean a person cannot learn. Sometimes the method, environment or amount of practice needs to change.
Myth 4: Intelligence alone determines success.
Intelligence matters, but it is not the whole story.
Motivation, practice, persistence, curiosity, prior knowledge and a supportive environment can all influence learning.
What Really Happened to Shubham?
We do not actually know what happened after that Parent–Teacher Meeting.
But imagine a different approach.
Instead of repeatedly telling Shubham to “pay attention”, his teacher begins involving him more actively. Lessons are broken into smaller tasks. He is encouraged to ask questions and make mistakes without fear.
Slowly, things begin to change.
Shubham starts participating. His confidence grows, and learning feels less like a burden.
Perhaps the problem was never that Shubham couldn’t learn.
Perhaps no one had yet discovered what was making learning difficult for him.
And Shubham may not be alone.
The Deep Dive
When Shalini walked into that Parent–Teacher Meeting, she believed something was wrong with her son.
Perhaps the real question was never:
“Why isn’t Shubham learning?”
Perhaps it should have been:
“What is stopping Shubham from learning well?”
That small change in the question can change the way we look at a learner.
A child.
A student.
Even ourselves.
Learning is not a race, nor is it simply about marks and certificates. It is a lifelong process of understanding, adapting and growing.
Education is not about filling minds with information. It is about helping minds grow.
